Gal Holiday & The Honky Tonk Revue

Another night, another great musical discovery.

I have to say, the music never stops in this city on the river. After a luscious meal at Arnaud’s, I head on over to Mimi’s in the Marigny, a bar and music club that’s so effortlessly cool, I felt all the cool seep into me the second I put my foot inside the doorway. Like so many great New Orleans clubs, Mimi’s is refreshingly concept-free: it’s a down-to-earth bar defined entirely by the chilled-out set of musicians and the many music-lovers gathered there on any given night, .

Upstairs, I caught Gal Holiday & The Honky Tonk Revue rocking away with her big country voice and big country band. After so much (great) jazz, it was a delight to catch something so different and fun. The band was having a blast on stage and the singer crooned something lovely and dance-worthy. After the first minute of listening I decided that Gal Holiday was probably my first big New Orleans musical crush. Seriously, this woman sings so deliciously, she needs her own wine pairing.

Here’s a quick clip of the lovely Gal Holiday as I heard her last night. Watch my more indulgent director’s cut of her Elvis Presley cover or simply check out her YouTube Channel.

Thanks for the music Gal and keep singing!

I traveled all the way from Atlanta, Ga to attend the Gal Holiday gig at Mimi’s. Gal has an incredible voice and infectious personality. They also performed earlier in the eve at the Ogden Museum. I got two shows in one night.

Mimi’s isn’t a club, it’s a bar. Clubs aren’t bars. Bars aren’t clubs. This information will help you on your travels, trust me. It’ll save you some broken noses.

Hey, Armak…he does actually call Mimi’s “a bar a d music club” in the sentence prior to the one you refer to. It’s the best of both worlds! And it was super nice to make your acquaintance, Andrew. Hope our paths cross again. Thanks for the stellar write-up and videos. You have no idea how terrible many of the live, fan shot vids are!!! (We still love our fans, though!) Damn smartphones.

New Orleans is my all time favorite city and it’s because of the people, the cultural mix, the history, the music, the food, the architecture etc etc. Gal Holiday is fantastic – and music is everywhere! My kind of town. I was there over Halloween and had so much fun! I cannot wait to go back…

…Andrew Evans’ observations are no surprise to me…since I first saw Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue perform at the BMC in late 2009 I knew she was clearly a talent….Andrew’s review was back in 2011…having watched her continually get better and better on my numerous trips to New Orleans I might suggest he go back for another look-see…….”Love ‘ya” V…hope to see you soon….your fan and supporter, Wally Moon…

Thanks Wally! I did exactly that and had such an amazing experience at her show at Tipitina’s last night.

  6. […] hear some pretty fabulous music all over the world, but no other singer has stolen my heart quite like Gal (Vanessa Neimann). The band rocks, the music is fresh, and her voice is like butter […]
